In the last few years, Genoa has showcased itself as a city attuned to local mobility issues, affirming its commitment to the evolving civic landscape and the dynamic changes in urban transportation. Its unwavering dedication has been accomplished through a series of intervention initiatives, such as the latest renovation of city’s bike lanes.

It is apparent that Genoa had already earned recognition from Legambiente in 2022 for its committment to environmental practices: the prize was assigned particularly due to the quality of the bicycle lane developed along Corso Italia. In November 2023, this acknowledgment set the stage for Genoa’s active involvement in the Adopt a Bike Lane project, a national initiative aimed at revitalizing urban bicycle routes. The programme encourages cyclists to log their daily routes in a dedicated app; consequently, a number of bicycle paths will be sponsored corresponding to the data depicting the most travelled routes. Following the footsteps of other major Italian urban centers such as Naples and Rome, Genoa has enthusiastically embraced the proposal, taking a significant step in promoting sustainable mobility to enhance the quality of life for its residents.

Ongoing developments in the city include the finalization of bike lanes between Albaro and Sturla, as well as those along Via Felice Cavallotti in both directions. These roads are equipped with specialized bicycle crossings and designated rest areas. Accompanying the construction efforts are a series of measures exemplifying Liguria’s proactive approach: aside from expanding bike-friendly infrastructure, the introduction of “case avanzate” (bicycle stop lines drawn in front of traditional lines to enhance cyclist safety at traffic lights) and modifications to speed limits (30 km/h in certain areas).

Matteo Campora, Genoa’s Mobility Councilor, underscored the significance of this initiative, stating: “The intervention was made possible also by resorting to PNRR funds [the National Recovery and Resilience Plan].” These improvements align with Genoa’s broader strategy to create additional bike-friendly areas, expanding accessibility towards the Levante area.

The constant commitment of Liguria’s capital in addressing mobility-related challenges not only promotes safety and sustainability but also contributes to solidifying the city’s reputation as a forward-thinking leader in environmental initiatives. By continuing to prioritize the quality of life of its residents through sustainable transport solutions, Genoa remains at the forefront of promoting positive urban development in Italy.
